DESCRIPTION

Prostatitis causes pain or discomfort between the legs where your wedding tackle is stuck on to the rest of you. It may also cause discharge from the penis, problems with peeing, pain on defaecation, foul smelling urine, abnormal ejaculation, sexual dysfunction, or indeed, no symptoms at all.

Sometimes the problem only becomes apparent when your partner developes symptoms, or you are found to have a low sperm count.

A common cause is sexually transmitted disease. The organism most often found is chlamydia. Appropriate swabs need to be taken at a "special clinic" which specialises in this problem. Failing that, a referral to a urologist by your GP is necessary.

I can refer you, if necessary, to The Doctors' Laboratory if you cannot get these tests done locally. Their profile comprises: mycoplasma and ureaplasma (from a urethral swab), chlamydia trachomatis by PCR, hepatitis B antigen, HIV antibodies, syphilis antibodies, Hep C antibodies, Herpes simplex by PCR

If you do have any positive tests, then your sexual partner also needs to be screened.

SAMPLE

The tests are performed on a sample of blood, a sample of urine and a urethral swab (this swab has to be taken at The Doctors' Laboratory and so an appointment is required with them).
